Carnival 2008 -Salgueiro Samba-Enredo, Rio de Janeiro ESCOLA DE ACADÊMICOS DE SALGUEIRO SECOND PLACE FINALIST in Carnival 2008 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. "O Rio Continua Sendo" (Trans. "Rio Still Is...) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Feb 10, 2008, past 3 AM, Salgueiro, as they are more commonly known, founded in 1953, almost stole the title away from first place Champion, Beija Flor, as they hit a major "home run" in Rio de Janeiro with their floats, dancers, singers and song in the middle of the night! As they entered the Sambadrome, the crowd roared "é campeã"! (trans. you're the champion). A week post-Carnival, almost, but the Brazilians were not yet finished with it as the best schools of Samba, and only the very best, paraded one more time for a closing farewell to "Carnaval" this Year. Salgueiro's theme was alluding to "the marvelous city of Rio de Janeiro" as it is called in Portuguese: "cidade maravilhosa." In actulality they called it: ""O Rio Continua Sendo..," which translates to "Rio de Janeiro still is...". Jairzinho, Brazilian-World-Cup-Champion soccer team player from the days o f Pelé (1970), was present in the middle of the "folia" ("fun") in a float decorated as Rio's soccer stadium, Maracanã. The car float carried flags from many soccer teams from Rio. But the real highlight was Salgueiro's master of the drummers, Mestre Marcão, who was awarded by "O Globo" as the best percussion section leader among all schools of Samba this Year. The award is called "O Estandarte de Ouro"(trans "golden emblem award"). Herein, the sound has been overdubed for the most part, but I kept some small clips(percussion) of the videotape with the original sound so to give more character to the caption. The video quality is limited to my picture cam. In the midst of a violence crisis in Rio recently, Salgueiro tries to rescue the pride of being "Carioca" (ie. a person born in Rio) writing a tune that pays tribute to Rio de Janeiro, telling wonderful stories about the city while describing the life style of its people. There is beer, soccer, the beach, the perfect hot weather and all that makes the lifestyle in Rio a heaven sent, if not for the crime waves. But that is their theme: restoring the image when "Rio is still the same as in the good ol' days." Hail, Rio de Janeiro! Viviane Araujo, the "lady in red" has promissed to appear again in 2009. She was the "Rainha de Bateria" (Queen of Percussionists) this year, dressed as Madam Vivi, alluding to Madam Satan, a famous crook in Rio. She actually knows how to play the little tambourin. Included: 3,900 members, 34 sections ("alas") and 8 allegorical floats.
